When Helping Hurts: Trauma’s Effects on First Responders
by Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, Posttraumatic Stress / Trauma Topic Expert Contributor
First responders such as firefighters, EMTs, and police officers face horrors in their work that most of us can’t imagine. In helping everyday people in the worst of times, they witness death, destruction, and much of the worst of what humans can do to hurt one another.
Firefighters face a demanding work environment. Long work hours, lack of sleep and risky exposure to fires create considerable stress. Some resort to drinking alcohol to cope. This behavior may develop into an alcohol use disorder and interfere with job performance.
